Hype Filtration

Indulge me in a small vent…

Things BigKid will cover about next-gen console releases:

  • actual photos
  • technical specs and features
  • available games
  • logo design (at a stretch, if we’re bored and the graphic design is interesting)

Things BigKid will not cover:

  • insidious ‘alternate reality’ style marketing campaigns through which corporations recruit the online audience as free labour to advertise their products for them. I mean, get a life people. Is it really fun to run around hunting down cryptic clues about bees and ant colonies in order to unveil a 30px square snippet of a vague 3D render of a small part of a yet-to-be-released product?

I’m sure alternate reality games started out as some amazing new form of ‘interactive fiction’ (whatever that means), but I’m dumbfounded at how easily the gaming media is buying into these tactics by marketroids who are simply generating hype when there’s no real news to report. Either put up or shut up, there’s more than enough real news out there that’s more worthy of our attention.
