WoW Gets Record Sales, Big Problems

World of Warcraft has sold a record 250 thousand copies during it’s first day making it the fastest growing online game in history, according to a Blizzard press release. Stores all over the world have sold out of the game, which is probably not a bad thing as the massive influx of player brought severe technical difficulties. More than 200 thousand people signed up for accounts in 24 hours, bringing the WoW servers to their knees at times. The servers are still struggling beneath the load of 100 thousand concurrent players, with more joining by the minute. There have been major delays and extended periods of lag, with some players having to wait in queues for up to two hours before being able to connect. Blizzard staff are working around the clock to rectify the issues.

Ok so they make more than 10,000,000 USD on the first day and have trouble providing servers, after they stress tested the program with 500,000 players. Hrmm oh well

when will ppl learn

That said i wanna play but common they had so long to be ready….

Isn’t there anyone contemplating ’staggered’ releases for online games that might be so popular?

That would make sense in some regards, but a lot of people seem to think it’s a race to level 60 and that they somehow miss out by starting the game even hours after it begins.

Blizzard were supposedly bring an extra 34 servers online yesterday — almost doubling their server count — that’s not going to help the servers already buckling under the weight though.

So the load isn’t distributed across to new servers? Craziness.

It is not even that is a race to level 60 in the first few days…

Main issue with not having a staggered release is that people want to get in and be the first to find something or explore to a new area. There are also issue with wanting to get in early to explore because after the first few days people start learning stats on items or how to complete a quest.

I think the race to be level 60 is not the answer . But probably because being a Warcraft game could be the answer .How many people bought WC3 on the first day ? How many people bought Diablo2 and LOD on the first day ? I think the name Blizzard says it all ,quality and playability.

Blizzard I think did not see or were plain arrogant to believe that their servers would be overloaded on day one of its release , plus the probs with subs card. Blizzard did not forsee that everything was ready and now the buyers and players of WoW have to put up with Blizzards continual excuses of ” we are aware of the problem and are working to resolve it.”.

As I heard from EB that the Aussie servers won’t be ready until dec6th . Perhaps somebody in Blizzard jumped the gun by announcing a early release date perhaps they should have left the release until dec15th and maybe everything would be ready for playing.

Aussie servers? There are no Oz servers. We just have access to Pacific servers located in the US. I don’t even know what that’s supposed to mean, but you need to read the official site and forums, not listen to EB sales reps.

Re. Blizzard being arrogant, I think that’s a bit unfair. They are *far* better to deal with than Sony. SOE is the benchmark in arrogance. There are issues with some servers right now - what do you want them to say? The only alternative to what they are already saying is to not say anything. Everyone would whinge about that too.

I don’t think any game in the history of the genre had anywhere near the number of people log on during the first day as WoW has had. That’s going to stress every system to breaking point. All the current whinging is painful. The petulance being displayed by some of the players on forums is obscene. There are problems, they are working to fix them (though my experience on Proudmoore has been almost hastle free from the moment I logged in). It will all be resolved, and the sky won’t fall.

Perhaps arrogance was the wrong word perhaps blinded by success and all those dollars passing their faces and going into their pockets might be better .

I wonder what will happen when the other countries come online ? Total Meltdown ?

The forums are alive with idiots who want something for nothing plus what about the patch ? Why is not available for manually downloading?

But Blizzard still has a lot of explaining at the end of the
day. What and when does the free month start ? Why was the free month not implemented easier ? But having to ( simulate ) opening a account is rather pathetic. I did not have to do this to play D2LOD on Battlenet .So whats the diff same servers same system ,no it’s called GREED.

I’m sorry Biggles, but if you don’t understand the fundamental difference between Battle.net and an MMORPG, I can’t help you. You really need to hit some forums and do some reading ;)

Well today, and all day at that too, even when it was at it’s absolute worst thursday, it was nigh flawlless.

I mean, sure. There were a few lag spikes, but you get that on anything, even file transfers. But as these were very few and far between, I think that Blizzard have sorted out the initial problems and I for one wish to greet our alien overloads…errr … I mean think that today was a blast. Very enjoyable and hassle free.

So what if they made the horrendous mistake of thinking that the uptake on their game would be far greater than their anticipations. I think you’d find that most every company (no matter the industry) would make similar choices and assumtions for a new release, or they would very soon go broke. Pessimism is your friend.

yes ,I know the diff between diablo2 and a mmorpg . One is free play and the other you pay through your nose to play. D2 cost $79 ,WoW $79 plus free months play ,if you provide your credit card details or pay for a sub card.

Yep you summed it up exactly. What’s your point?

Biggles.. mate, there’s nothing more we can say to you.

WoW has been one of the most enjoyable MMO’s I’ve played. It is more stable and lag free than some MMO’s that have been running for years, and a heck of a lot more fun.

WoW doesn’t do anything different in regards to patches, billing or other “out of game” things than any other MMO.

Perhaps MMO’s are just not for you, and you should go back to freeplay games where you seem to feel you get your money’s worth.

Bruce , “Hypersensitive” . mmmmm must be all those blue smarties I like.

Meet Biggles the new Hyper KId whinging is my game so blame me so ,if you dare ?

And what’s with space ,comma all the time? Keyboard issues?

Steady on bruce, no need to get into a personal flamefest.

Biggles just isn’t an MMO gamer is what it boils down to. He’s welcome to the opinion that WoW is bad, and frankly one less player ingame who doesn’t like the game (why???) is fine by me =)

I did not say I did not like WoW ,what I said I did not like the way Blizzard launched WoW amid all the mess . For example servers problems, no 60 day sub (gameplay) cards being available and they way that you have to setup a account.

Just to put the record straight I played WoW yesterday and yes , I enjoyed it . I played on the draenor server with a orc shaman lv8 character by the name of Mycordor.

So yes everybody is entiltled to their own opinions whether it be right or wrong.

Everyone should know that every MMO game has alot of problems when they are first released. No amount of beta testing can compare to the live release. I dont know why people didnt know or expect that. That is why i am waiting a good month or two before i play. Sure its disappointing but it was not unexpected.

why it’s not free… blizzard would need to maintain a crapload of data multiplied by a crapload of different accounts… and memory space and upkeep for tat costs, well… a crapload… basically WoW’s charging price is about the same for other pay MMO… eg. PristonTale, City Of Heroes and Ragnarok, only those games aren’t as good… Blizzard had the decency to implement game cards… Also, considering WoW was pretty much created about a year ago and they basically spent the year testing it, and 1 week of solid stress testing with 500,000 users… this wasn’t free for Blizzard and most companies don’t even do this thing… sharing load on multiple servers is also an incredibly hard task and they just didn’t foresee so many people go live on day one… so give Blizzard a break, they gave us SC, Diablo 1 & 2 and War3… and now WoW…

So yes everybody is entiltled to their own opinions whether it be right or wrong.”

And in your case they’re usually wrong and antagonising.

This little gem says it all really:

“Biggles • 11:50 AM • 27.06.04

Idsoftware ? Are they not the ones who kept boasting about Duke Nukem Forever? Well Where is it ? VAPORWARE.”

Bliizard are a bunch of greedy bastards. With over $100 million US in revenues, not having enough hardware is borderline criminal. hell, you shouldn’t sell the discs if you can’t handle the traffic.

Buck, I think you’ll find that Blizzard is doing everything in their power to fix the issues with overloading.. but the money has to come from somewhere, and despite what many people think, it does not go straight from the box into Blizzards pocket..

From the box price, the Retailer takes their cut, the Distributor takes theirs, the Publisher (Vivendi) takes most of it, and Blizzard gets whatever is left over, once the development cost of the game has been recouped by the Publisher.

From the monthly fee, again, the Publisher gets their share, Blizz gets theirs.. then they use that money to run the development team, pay for server hardware, pay for bandwidth etc.

Blizzard isn’t getting rich from this (yet), and there have been improvements to the servers the past few days.. which is good, because I was ready to cancel my account due to the server issues!
