Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo

… is out now. It’s only 208 MB (never thought I’d say those words in that order) and worth checking out if you’re wondering how far this engine has come. I think the graphics are impressive, and the gameplay has that excellent snappy speed to it all (at a much faster framerate than I’d expected). But I couldn’t help but be a little dissappointed at how samey most of it all is to the last edition. Maybe they could have done a little more polish to the overall package before pushing out a ‘beta’ demo. System font doesn’t really say ‘2004′ to me! I’m sure some nicely fought rounds of this new Onslaught mode will soften the blow.

Some people like it. I’ve played it and it is fun for a bit, but never having played UT before and going up against the old hands is daunting and becomes progressively less fun. Like trying to pick up Counterstrike as a n00b.

Onslaught mode is definitely the main reason to continue playing but I still prefer CoD out of the most recent games. Many of the CoDers I work with went back to Call of Duty because they had preferred the way it played. Maybe BF Vietnam will the one to break the spell…

I’m torn. I want to play something new and not suck! It’s really embarrasing when Monty decapitates you with one of those hovering vehicles.

I’ve been playing the UT2004 demo a lot and I have to say my initial assessment was too harsh. The engine is fantastically fast and there’s some real innovation in there. You can even install the Microsoft Voice Recognition SDK and have the bots understand voice commands! The Onslaught mode is terrific and the vehicles are great fun. The single Onslaught map seems to have been balanced really well… I’ve seen at least a couple of online games where one team has come right back to win when they had almost no ground left.

As for Call of Duty etc.. these days any game in which you’re expected to play an American GI just shit me to tears. Give me SciFi or contemporary urban settings for my murder simulations please!

Yes, I’ve also been playing UT, and I would have to say I find it a bit flat.

win or losing(this is onslaught which is the only saving grace for mindless deathmatch)

is kind of well a big flat liner for me. sure it frustrates me to lose… But I don’t get the same thrill when I survive for a bit in Call of Duty. Maybe its the whole respawn, die, respawn thing that causes this reaction in me.

I Really like the Goliath tanks, though there is no really outstandingly fun weapon.

In fact its all rather Quake3 ish to me.

I think its the slow, crouch, prone, sidestep that keeps call of duty mildly interesting.

Though that having been said I am pretty well in need of something new to shine.

Hopefully Battlefield can help me

Geee ooorge!!!!

the big gun goes BOOM. love it.

Rumors of the 64-bit client for Windows is my biggest draw… but where the heck is it? :\
