Fame and Glory

BigKid is rather chuffed to announce a new resident games industry cartoonist. Stark Reality joins the growing list of local industry cartoons. We will be hosting author Jason Stark’s comical comment on the game development experience until such time as it becomes so popular that he no longer needs us. Then we plan to ignore him completely. In the rave accompanying his freshmore effort, Jason introduces himself, and the reason for his two-dimensional meglomania.

I've got a bad feeling about this...

Stark Raving

I suppose some kind of introduction is in order. My name is Jason Stark and I occasionally work at Krome Studios, which is a fairly large games development studio. That’s me in the E3 shirt, alongside my wife who also works at Krome. In real life the E3 shirt is fading badly and serves as a constant reminder that I should have bought five of them when I had the chance.

I have been to E3. I have been a team leader on AAA games titles. I have mail-ordered obscure animation DVDs from the states and paid far too much for them. I own two consoles, two PCs, many, many joypads, a dancemat and a force-feedback steering wheel. I am well-versed in RPG speak, both digital and analogue and can spend many a happy hour bitching about D&D’s magic system to anyone who will care to listen.

I am also, however, a mild-mannered middle class family guy who lives in the sleepy suburbs of Brisbane city. I have four budgies, two dogs and a cat. I mow my lawn and spend too much time worrying about things like guttering and lawn edging. When it cannot possibly be avoided I will even help my children with their schoolwork. I ride a pushbike.

“Stark Reality” is my attempt at an almost documentary-like record of real-life events that happen to me on a day to day basis. Some of these real-life events may be fictional, but that is not my fault. It is reality’s fault for not being funny enough while fitting neatly into a three-panel strip.

I am going to attempt to produce one strip every week with an accompanying “rant”. Sometimes the rant and the comic will share some sort of relevant connection, but only when blind chance conspires to make it so. I hope to entertain and inspire, to provoke and amuse but mostly I want to be taken off of BigKid’s server for being too popular. So please, share in the responsibility of proving the sheer silliness of the internet economy and click away.

If you have any comments, comic ideas or relevant events in the games industry that you wish to share with me, feel free to email me at jcarstark@dodo.com.au

There’s only one. Where are the rest you cheap bastard! Have you no loyalty to your fan base? So you’ve hit the big time now and you couldn’t care for the little guy who taght you to dwaw thumbs on backwards well I hope you get successfull and choke on your own collectable actionfigures small accessories!

You had to buy the shirt?!

For shame.

If it isn’t free, it isn’t worth taking home.

Mind you, most of the stuff that IS free isn’t worth taking home either.

Including the shirts you had to get seven booth stamps to get (!)

Yes I had to buy the shirt. It wasn’t cheap either as the exchange rate wasn’t too healthy back then. It does make a great "I’m a games developer" signpost though which would work even better if anyone noticed or cared.

Oh well.

heh… the memories of sending boxes home ahead full of the evil cd’s that you collect everywhere! Ahh the stamps! They are always fun, shame the tshirts are crap quality or have yukky logos on them. Although, I didn’t go last year and there were video cards given out and my mates got 3 :(

Debating going this year…

That’s why I take two suitcases with me every time I go - one large one, which is empty except for the small one with the clothes and stuff. At the end of each day of collecting E3 swag, empty the contents into the large suitcase, and sort it out when you take it home with you on the flight…

I think E3 itself needs its own strategy guide!
