Taken A-Back

I said after E3 last year that the sequel to the world’s largest MMORPG, Lineage 2, was the best looking game by far in its genre at the show. And so it was. However after being shown a sneak peek of the Alpha recently, I was a little taken aback.

asl?

Fantasy has always been larger than life in its characterizations of the human, and particularly the female, form. It’s an accepted part of the territory with a long and established tradition. Also, being a Korean game the graphic and animation bent in L2 is very stylized. All characters are viewed in third person, and run almost doubled over with their arms extended rigidly behind them. This seems strange to the Western eye on even mundane models. But none of that explains the beautifully rendered, Double-D busted, leather bondage geared Dark Elf female. Suggestive doesn’t seem a strong enough word. Take a look at the normal play view for yourself (click on the picture). I can vouch for those legs and buttocks (and breasts) all moving mezmerizingly realistically. There’s no way it wasn’t intended to be as in-your-face erotic as possible.

I’m no prude and admire the female form as much as any man, but surely something is wrong with a game pitched at teenagers offering such gratuity (and of the 40 or so other people I saw running around, only three weren’t using the DE female model). There’s going to be a lot of sexually charged 15 year olds rear driving DE babes on the hunt for cyber sex when the game ships later this year.

Which is sort of the point.
