Blue Wizard Is About To Die
If that phrase means anything to you (and it should), then you might want to check out this new book…
Blue Wizard Is About To Die! is Seth “Fingers” Flynn Barkan’s literary love song to the arcade and console games of the 80’s, 90’s and beyond. Billed as the beer and pretzels of poetry, the autobiographical collection records Barkan’s remembrances of classic games like Joust, Sinistar, Marble Madness, Arkanoid, Pac-Man, and many more.
The word “irreverent” does not do justice to Barkan’s near-psychotic sense of humor. Whether portraying Mario as a Stalin-esque tyrant who rules the Mushroom Kingdom with an iron fist, writing eulogies for dead Paperboys killed in the line of duty, or recounting his memories of beating Kid Icarus as his father trained singers for a production of Stephen Sondheim’s Company, the end result is a hilariously skewed overview of cultural iconography never before seen in modern literature.
Sounds pretty interesting, and at $10 it’s worth picking up for anyone who fondly remembers wasting their parent’s money at the local arcade. I’ve been hearing great things about it from overseas.
