Idiots like the hacker don’t realise that any project big or small is always subject to changes to schedules due to unexpected things like milestones taking longer than expected etc. It isn’t lying at all. This hacker thinks by retrieving all of this intellectual property and basically saying "Hey guys, I got it all for you! They were lying because see what I got, it is a working version of Half Life 2" is really pathetic and immature. Hope the hacker’s 5 seconds of fame turns into 50 years behind bars.

This bizarre attitude that a game company owes us something is a recent development. It’s like the hackers and their supporters believe they are justified in their theft of code because HL2 is in some way "theirs". I wonder if it is an indirect result of the aggressive modding support Valve has provided. Valve more than any other company has been broadly egalitarian in it’s approach to their fan base. Maybe that has bred this attitude of petulant "ownership" in some of the players, like spoilt, indulged children? It doesn’t say much for a certain section of the HL/CS/TF community, and shows how skewed their thinking is. I hope the loyalty of the rest of the fan base proves bigger than the selfishness of these few. It would be a sad thing for this all to set a general precedent, and for companies watching this unfold further remove themselves from gamers as a result.

Wow… the hacker seems intent on hurting valve still. I read today he has now released the Half-Life 1 remake and Counter-Strike for Half-Life 2 that Valve were planning on being a huge surprise for their loyal fans. This is just a tragedy. Turns out the 100% source code and pre-gold story was just a hoax.

Monty, I don’t think that Valves support has made these hackers petulant and spoilt, I think that, sadly, they just where that way to start with.

The hacker’s justification for doing this is based on facts (*NB obtaining all the cz/hl2/tf2/cs2/source files was prob not a singular effort), and what you boys don’t seem to have comprehended, are the numerous insults valve has so generously payed their supporters (myself included). I WILL buy hl2, and I love valve’s work, but there’s still that small part of me (no penis jokes plz) that commends the hacker(s) for what he/they did.

Let me get this straight - you think Valve has "insulted" you. You don’t know anyone from a company that made some games you played, and they have in some way slighted you personally by doing so and not fulfilling some sort of expectation you have.

There have been times I’ve been furious with the dodgy hit detection in the HL engine, and frustrated by Valve’s refusal to address it along with the massive security problems in their game (which made Counter-Strike such a hacker’s dream), but it would have been idiotic of me to take that personally. The GAME (it’s a game, by the way) - Half-Life - was worth the purchase price alone. It would have been self-delusion on a very strange level to think that one purchase price somehow obligated Valve to continue serving me free content. I’m boggled you can hold that attitude, let alone DEFEND it. I don’t think you understand how petulant and childish it makes you.

When I saw the E3 trailer of HL2, I understood what they had been doing for five years. Even if I had held some self-indulgent personal slight against Valve, I don’t think the delusion that the company were somehow ignoring or wronging me personally could have persisted. HL2 is the first genuine step forward in FPS technology in several years. It’s obvious where their effort has been spent.

But even if I had managed to coddle my misguided self-righteousness and maintain my silly virtual grudge, I could in no way have used it to justify corporate theft and sabotage on such a massive scale! That you and others do so is just boggling to me, and is loud testimony to your character (or lack thereof). The hackers have taken five years of the company’s work (five years of personal labour, investment, effort, persistence, and creativity by other people - they are people like you and me with personal attachment to their work) and given it away to the world; something the hackers neither earned nor had any investment in or rights to. I’m honestly staggered you can think that is defensible on any level. You make yourself an arrogant fool by attempting to do so in public.

Whatever argument and self-justification you conjure up though, you are simply wrong - morally, legally, and personally. Which no doubt is why you hide behind "anon", because you know that as well as I do.

Monty, you hit the nails right on their proverbial heads. there is absolutely no justification possible for what the hackers has done and are now doing. Having friends in the gaming industry, I know how many hours they work on each and every game. Needless to say, if anon and the rest of those who see this as a righteous move ever did this amount of work for a game or anything else other than gaming, they would not be so righteous about it.

Besides, these hackers may have hurt Valve more than they could’ve perceived (a walnut can only hold so much information, anyway) and therefore pushed Valve into bankruptcy since much of the revenue they were expecting to earn from HL2 was from licensing the game engine which is now floating around freely on the net source code and all courtesy of these dickheads.

the leaked half life 2 is only the e3 demo, it has virtually no functionality. The single player game is not included, as the large ‘.pak’ file is missing. There is no online support ‘Obivously’, the leak is basically worthless. It says at the top of the console that it was compiled 4 days before the 30/09/03, well how can this be the case when the e3 demo was released in may/june and its identical to this leak. The leak even has the demo files used in all the half life 2 preview movies that were released (the e3 demo series). Yeah its worth looking at it to see all the new weapons, but if you have a shitty gfx card then its not worth it, a d×9 gfx card is required to run these amazing graphics that we saw in the trailers.

So all you simple minded people out there…WAKE THE FUCK UP

In my opinion the only reason people download such leaks, is to look ‘cool’. As you would have to be a complete retard to get any enjoyment out of playing them.

If i were to download this, it would not be to try and be a smart ass and say, ‘ R this is shitty, its totally unfinished and buggy as hell!’ it would be to marvel at the incredible effects that valve have masterfully put together, like the water =D heh.

For someone to downlod it and critise is completly fucking daft!, because it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realise that it being a beta leak in the long run means its pretty much not finsished!.

So, to round it up, its a undiniable fact that this ‘leaker’ is a total retard in everyway possible, and (like any sane person) should wait for the retail!

Don’t download it if you want to see the directx 9 effects or high dynamic range lighting either, the thing is stuck on opengl mode, which looks damn good, but the only reason I wanted to see the demo was to check out directx9 and especially the hdr lighting, and the only entertaining thing about the demo is screwing around with the rocket launcher

personally, I think valve, or atleast someone from valve, is anon. And this crappy release and all this publicity is just covering up their Mid 2004 release date. From everything that I’ve read around the internet, I’m not expecting to see half-life 2 till june of 2004 and I don’t believe for a second that this leak has anything to do with it being released then.

One flaw in the "It was Valve" theory, the source contained proprietry third party code, and you can bet your ass that Valve is in some serious legal hotwater at the moment over that. You usually have to sign away your firstborn child on the NDA these days to get a hold of third party source..

CS 2 is part of Half-Life 2. We know this because the leaked version of the game includes fully working CS2 code and mapping tools.
