Half-Life 2 Source Code Leaked
Source code for Half-Life 2 has been stolen and leaked onto the internet by unknown hackers. Valve managing director Gabe Newell has posted to Halflife2.net confirming the (devastating) theft alluded to earlier by Slashdot, and appealing to the community for help in tracking down those responsible. Source code is the uncompiled raw code, as opposed to the compiled (and fully binary) form games appear in publicly. Without source code anyone wanting to look inside the software can at best make only educated guesses as to how the original code appeared.
While the hacker theory is compelling, my money is on a disgruntled employee.

It’s not only valve that suffers because of this.. the community who were looking forward to playing this game online will now have to deal with bot-makers who have a headstart on the actual release.. valve will have to go into recovery mode while they change the protocols or try (vainly) to stop would-be (will-be) cheaters cheating. Thereby further delaying this game.
I usually have a fair amount of sympathy for hackers.. freedom of information/finding security holes/whatever way you want to try to justify it, I could usually agree - or at least giggle.. but not here…
I feel really sorry for those valve guys right now… there’s gonna be some legal stife about the licenced portions of their code being released. And this whole ordeal will only cost their money and our time.
