Alston Retiring

The man described by detracters as “the world’s biggest Luddite” has stepped down from his office as Federal minister for Communications, Information Technology and The Arts, and announced his retirement. Prime Minister Howard dropped the bombshell yesterday when commenting on a ministerial reshuffle. Alston alienated many Australian internet users, especially gamers, during his term as minister. Among his more celebrated efforts were dismissing broadband as a gaming platform, calling the national rollout of broadband a waste of time and linking it with the use of pornography (thank goodness he never visited a LAN), and spending $4 million on the development of a second rate and buggy website. I don’t know about the last one though. Six figures is a small price to pay for such clean looking access to generic government information. I think they’ve fixed most of the 380 scripting errors originally on the front page.

Ding dong the bitch is dead.. maybe now we can see some more Govt support for our under-recognised industry….

Now we just need someone to get in there and start kicking the Tel Companies and get rid of damned Caps. Invest in ways of making high speed internet access available all over Australia.. Look into some way to make telstra do the right thing. Give incentives to offshore companies to launch High Speed internet in Australia in order to bring some competition to the table. Someone needs to get in there and revive the dead horse that has been beaten so hard that its ribs are now exposed for the whole world to see.

And Monty.. Well said.
