Meridian 59 Goes D3D
Before Everquest, before Ultima Online, there was Meridian 59. M59 was one of the first commercial 3D graphical online RPGs, and still draws sighs of nostalgia from those who played it. It is regularly argued by M59 aficionados that the game has yet to be equalled, let alone surpassed by modern MMORPGs. In 2001, M59 was resurrected by it’s original makers and put back online, and is now in the process of receiving an overhaul. While not in the same league as the latest games, the new rendering engine makes it visually sophisticated enough to be considered by those more interested in gameplay than eye-candy. There is no definite word on a final release for the new 3D client, but recent screenshots on the game’s site look promising.
