KOTOR (PC): No News Is No News

While XBox owners soak in the RPG glory of Bioware’s Knights of the Old Republic, PC gamers like myself continue to wait impatiently for the PC version (curse you Bill Gates!). The game sounds fantastic, and as most of my impressions have come from actual reviews and player reports not hyped up previews, I’m fairly confident this is one Lucasarts title that isn’t going to leave me with that old flat, resigned disappointment gaming fans of Star Wars know and live with.

After a few hours flicking through online forums in enthusiastic anticipation, I have discovered there is no planned multiplayer addon for the PC, something I have mixed feelings about. I’m a die-hard advocate of multiplayer, but there is much to be said for the single-player experience - especially from a design and narrative point of view - so I’m remaining open-minded. It is also fairly clear that although the PC version is now late, there is still no release date, so those dodgy XBox owners can continue their goadings for a while at least. In the meantime, I will nuture my expectation of a superior PC version, and console myself with screenshots.

Have at you!

Oh Monty.. Well.. Bloody picked up my copy yesterday and am quite pissed off at all the long verbose blah blah the characters just need to shut up. I can’t remember the last time I was on a star ship and someone told me that we were being shot at, and then calmly told me about using thumb sticks and buttons and what not. Arg. So you can imagine the controls are not picked up straight away. Unless you read the manual.. Which is quicker then the guy telling you what is what.

Bought the bloody things for 99 bucks.. Because EB, who told me on the date of my pre-order that it would be 10 bucks off re-negged on the deal.. Then would not match Dick Smiths Price of 86 bucks cause Dick had none in stock. Arrg.. No win there for the consumer.. but I could take it back at the end of one week get the refund and then buy it from dick when he gets more stock.. Damn EB, I think the pricing and ill supply of gaming products to other stores is something that the ACCC needs to look at. I don’t care if you are specialty store. ANyhow back to the game.

Anyhow, making my choices toward the darkside and so far it has been a bit of a hard slug (played for approx an hour and a bit). The battles are fun once you work em out. I’m pretty far from being a jedi at the moment though I would guess.

AS far as gaming experiences.. It is some place between FallOut and Vampire the Masquerade. I’m not saying this is how it is. But if you could imagine.

As for Multiplayer.. They would need to create a completely different storyline and or cut out and replace certain quests. Geez I’m doing one now, that I couldn’t even take party members along to. (Perhaps if they were smart enough they could make the multiplayer storyline run somewhat parallel to the single one).

I’m sure as the hours progress I will become more familiar with the game and the way it needs to be played.

Hey reading the manual and the abilities too look forward to are pretty cool.

Anyone else getting annoyed at the dodgy frame rate. Is there going to be a patch for the FSAA or whatever it is that the Xbox does so bad.. Arg it can get down righ ugly if you try to do too much is doing on screen.

Well HALO will be hitting PC soon. SO I guess KOTOR might be a little ways off. I haven’t bothered with FPS on my Xbox or anything so far.. Just can’t do the whole controller run and shoot thing.. I need a mouse and Keyboard.

I"m hoping the PC version is a bit better. There won’t be the same framerate problems, and the textures will be higher res apparently. Are you enjoying the progression so far?

The further you go the better so far. I’m enjoying the progression.. As the Scoundrel class you get some pretty cool bonuses. And the ability to upgrade your attributes depends on your class as well. So strength might cost 2pts for one character type and another it will cost only 1. So in away you really are lead toward building your character in the cheapest way. And that does have its benefits.

Haven’t obtained the force yet.. But I’m running around with a Wookie and Twi-lek (or some girl called mission with blue skin and tumas growing out of her skuil). Haven’t come across many things I can’t kill so far. .At the moment my main character is a level 6 one.

There are a lot of quests and side quest to do.. And the way you play through it could depend on how soon you want to cash in on your quest.. I must have about 10 going at the moment and I’ve only completed 3. So that’s something.

The battle is fun to watch and participate in.

Other then loads of dialogue (which thankfully you can click through) the game has had a nice pace. And is quite enjoyable.

Apparently, when Xbox live hits there will be downloadable content. Hopefully this content will be available on the front of magazines, cause I’m moving soon to a place where telstra and Optus won’t hook up cable.. Damn them..

..

See now, if there’s no cable, I’m not going there…

I’m a jedi now.. I’ve done so many wrong tings that the physical appearance of my character has changed. The eyes are clouded over, a beard is appearing. Skin is paler.

So just to get the branching right.

First you start with three classes non-jedi clases.

Then you add a jedi class after your training. Which can be given to you after a quick questionaire or chosen by you.

Then if you are more into the darkside. Your selection of dark force powers is cheaper, hence the darkside character gets a different set of powers.

This game is gonna keep me going for a while.

The semi-turn based battling is quite addictive.. Playing around with situations and quests is fun.. So Yeah.. I think I’ll get a bit of replay out of this game.

So far.. Thumbs.. WAY UP!!!

"I have discovered there is no planned multiplayer addon for the PC, something I have mixed feelings about."

Once you play the game, you’ll see what a silly comment this is, it’s a game focused at being an enriched single player experience..

"so those dodgy XBox owners can continue their goadings for a while at least. In the meantime, I will nuture my expectation of a superior PC version"

Why say something stupid like this? such an elitist comment.

shane : if your pissed off at the dialogue you shouldn’t have picked up the game, it’s an RPG, you are role-playing.. the game is story-based, hence lots of NPC speech, and lots of ‘boring’ cut-scenes..

Anyway, I spose I better comment on the game whilst I’m here, the game is thoroughly enjoyable all the way through (well I found it, anyway), the chance you get to speak with your companions throughout the game adds a depth to your NPC’s that I haven’t much before, it was a nice addition, and it’s all these little touches that make the game so great, things like the swoop bike racing, the pazaak, the multiple approaches possible for achieving what you need to throughout the game, I really can’t put all of this into a post but seriously, if your an xbox owner, this game is a must-buy IMHO, and I would even go so far as to say, if the game wasn’t coming for PC, then consider buying an xbox for it (and Bioware’s next RPG for the xbox, - Jade Empire)..

Gosh, thanks for enlightening us Stryder.

Now take a deep breath, and go back and reread the post with a sense of humour.

Hey Stryder.. I know plenty of RPGS with a lot less dialogue then this game. I’m just glad you can flick through it.. Next time I play through, I’m gonna have my finger ont he A Button. But yes the dialoge is important in this game and when I wrote my first blurb I’d only been playing for an hour and the dialogue options seemed fruitless. I wanted to kill that guy who’s voiced by the geeky lawyer from channel 10’s "The Guardian". My characters grown a better beard then him now anyway. But alas he is still alive, even when I let him die in battle.. He pops back into existance, he’s worse then Ben Affleck.

Hey but on the upside.. With the dialogue options you can lie, and try to convince peoply to give you more money.. And show yourself to be darker rather then light.. I just wish actions were louder then words..

IE.. Instead of turning up and saying I’m hear to save you.. Turn up and chop that person up, or just grab the person and run.. I just want to be a bit more Darth MAul-ish the strong silent type. I want the other characters to say.. You don’t say much do ya. I want to be able to nod yay or nay, or tilt my head like I understand.. And most of all I want to be able to strike down that Jedi Master that looks a bit like Martin Scorsesee.. Just because he don’t trust me.

As for it being narrative based. Why oh why, do they constantly rewrite teh history of the star wars universe.. Someone just nail it down.. And bease everything from the IP on that.. Geez I haven’t even been to QLM to have my medichlorines tested yet.. And dammit, why does every major battle a long time ago in a galaxy far far away have to major segment set on Tatto. If they make a second movie.. That damn planet better be "wiped from the face of the galaxy".

Apart from the Star Wars aspect, this game consists of things I normally despise, RPG’s with Turn based combat. I’m about 13 hours in and on Tattooine as a light side jedi and am absolutely loving it."

The light side is easy to maintains. Just say nice things and give people money and you get light points.

as for the blah, shane. It’s a talky game with many puzzles based aroundthe speech so its unavoidable but the characters sure suffer from verbal diorrhea!

I was put on to http://www.blackstar.co.uk for KotOR. A$77.50 landed. I preordered it and got it two days before local EB. Failing that, look in your junk mail catalogues, Kmart have it for 88.

I know Kmart, Dick Smith Big W… Etcetera have it cheaper.. But unless those stores near and EB have it in stock on the day, EB won’t match the price. Sure.. Big W had it in on Monday and heaps of it.. I guess that’s the price I paid for buying on Launch.. Last time I buy a launch Title from EB (Unless they give me a free game a month for the rest of the year.) SO I will be getting Soul Calibur 2 from a more fair and reputable dealer and no where near the release date.

Sorry monty, I think you must have caught me on a bad day

It can-t be possible!! 5 years, 1 month ago

I was waiting for this game for a long time!!… but now, that I can see that it will have no multiplayer possibilities the world has changed for me :-(

I will follow the Dark Side of The Force…

Alright! I’m seriously angry at EB!!! The liars!!! I cannot control myself!!! When I rang up on Monday they said it would be in on Sunday.

O.k. says I, its an awesome game, i can wait that long.

Come Saturday I ring up and they tell me it will be in Wednesday. Come Tuesday I decided to wring up and check it was now pushed back to Friday.

By now, i’m nashing my teeth in fury, so I get my younger brother to wring up about 1 minute later,

guess what?

IT HAD BEEN PUSHED BACK ! WEEK IN LIKE 5 MINUTES!!!

And dont anyone tell me to calm down! This is a government conspiracy, funded by Bill Gates to get people totaly ed off so that they bash their computers forcing you to buy more!!!

Don’t tell me i’m crazy!!!

I’m the only one who’s not crazy.

Oh, I’ll make you see the truth alright.

(PS, i actually screamed ((AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH)) at an EB attendent ’till they hung up on me. Actually, I might ring them now…

… THEIR PHONE IS ENGAGED, NOW I"M ANGRY.

Alright my fury is appeased…

I just rang EB and it has been pushed back more…

So I rang up another shop and they have it in this Friday!!! Sweet Blessed hapiness.

HAPPY!!!
