Living for Speed

“A group of developers from Black & White got together and used their bonuses to fund a project called Live For Speed. This online racing simulator uses the Internet as its distribution channel exclusively.” - games.slashdot.org

Not a new idea - bypassing the publishers & distributors - but interesting to see it funded from the proceeds of a ‘real’ game. 12 pounds sterling gets you racing.

I’ve been playing this game a fair bit, during beta and various other stages.. But at the moment it lacks a fun form of advancement. To me it reeks more and more of tech demo. Trying to get a big deal secured. It really doesn’t yet warrant money.

It simulates driving nicely.. But not enough variation for me.. Too few cars and tracks.

Just bought my LFS S1 licence after having been driving LFS from the start.

Believe me, it has more going for it than you think. The S1 release has plenty of tracks and cars to keep you interested for a long long time and that is before thinking ahead to S2, S3 and S4. The netcode is superb, everything is polished, the online key system is pretty bulletproof (if you change any hardware in your PC that is using the key for example, it will disable itself and you have to apply for another key - limit of 3 per subscriber), what more can you expect? This sim puts many big name productions to shame and it is good to see the authors are protecting their work with a very rock solid authentication system.

This is the BEST driving sim ever

Agreed Null, as far as phusics go I think this beats GPL. It is just so much better driving modern day 4wd, rwd & fwd sport cars, and the racing is closer because of it. Online it cannot be beaten as far as net code, I run a 56k modem and you would think you are running an ADSL or a cable connection. It cost me $50 total by sending a cheque and I am totally happy I went ahead and purchased the game.

It is a good game but the biggest downfall is so much dedication and practice is required to be competitive. I don’t think I will be buying S2 onwards like I was going to originally. It is a cool sim but it can totally consume you. I was getting hooked on it trying to beat my personal best times and it was for nothing. I can’t improve on them anymore. The world record holders are so hardcore they possibly don’t do anything else but drive LFS full time.

neh! this game rocks, a friend and i purchasing licenses between us, bummer about the hardware/key change, as a technician we are upgrading our machines like changing our undies…. hmmm have to keep a machine stock for the game, but overall great fun and even better online :) Cheers
