Game Makers Aren’t Chasing Women
Allie flogs that horse one more time, wonders where the smell is coming from.
Shacknews led me to this article in Wired, examining the old and slightly tired issue of why the gaming industry obstinately insists on chasing the post-adolescent male market to the exclusion of all others.
Hidden on the second page is a link to a fairly interesting study (PDF) into female players of Everquest, which asks the question why these women will persist in playing a game that can be argued to actively exclude them though the use of such dirty tactics as the chain mail bikini. If they play despite the overt sexism inherent in the world, would many more play if the MMORPG were more inclusive? Or are the developers too **** scared of alienating the prized, male, audience?
Despite the success of cross-over games such as the Sims, the powers that wield the money in the games industry (at least in the west) are remarkably leery of financing a game that strays too far away from the male-centric mould. But considering the current carnage in the industry it seems crazy that companies would ignore the opportunity to expand the market. Not only to women. There has to be a fairly large audience of men who don’t fit neatly into the current gamer “ideal”.
So why this blinkered approach? Is it just because the industry is dominated by men and they will damn well make the games that appeal to them?
There is definitely something in this. I’ve been in the games industry for a couple of years, and while I have never felt in the slightest bit discriminated against, I do get heartily sick of the eye-rolling when I describe myself as a gamer but admit that I don’t play first person shooters. Why are the only games that “count” the ones that involve shooting other people in various painful ways?
So I’m interested to know: Are there any female gamers out there in the BigKid audience? What are your thoughts on this? Any male gamers even who would like to call me out? Bring it on.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go feed my bemani addiction.

I think its cool that games like "Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball" are providing strong rolemodels for women gamers to look up to…[cough] Girls just wanna have fun, they just wanna, they just wannaaha:)
