Most free online games look a bit dodgy, but free download/free access title Planeshift looks as good as anything I’ve seen. Currently the single server only ever has about 20 people on it, and the code is still under construction and a bit buggy, but this game has a very good chance of being worth playing.

Interestingly, the above title is being developed using the open source engine "Crystal Space" and is cross platform (ie, Linux, PC and Mac) AFAIK.
Open Source + MMO seems a good business model, afterall MMO money is made from the monthly subscriptions not the sale price.
I imagine that once Planeshift is released (it’s currently at version 0.2) it’ll have a fee attached, though the game will still be free (pick a meaning).
Had a look around this tonight. It’s very basic at the moment, but graphically and artistically it is very impressive. All you can do is collect rubies (those that aren’t bugged). The movement also feels very unbalanced, and you can’t invert the mouse yet. ‘m’ changes views, ‘’ goes to mouselook and back again. I heard they are planning to go beta in about a year - it’s pre-alpha at the moment. I hope they do, it’s looking promising.
it will take a while but i will be checking back periodically to see how much they add/extend the servers abilities. it can get laggy at the worst of times but good to wander about and check out at the best of them. not a huge map but as i say i’ll be back a bit to check the place out.
definitely promising definitely worth watching.

Planeshift is a really kewl game, although there’s not a whole world to explore, the graphics are superb and there are fun things to do.

you can’t do anything in the game but run around looking for crystals which you use to buy stuff which you can’t use. you are stuck in a city with retarded NPCs. the graphics are good but there is not completed quests yet and the game is not done yet so you will get "not available" alot.

Has some serious potential, when they are finally finished with it.
Remember everyone, this game is not even in alpha stages yet, and it still looks good and plays alright for that…the next release will be out in a few months with combat, etc. and yes, it will never have a price attached to it.
I am an extremly active planeshift ..community member.. right now planeshift is really not "playable" in the sence of a game, its more a political game at the moment, check the site and forum, this is the best community i have ever been apart of.

This game looks very promising. THe graphics on the screen shots are stunning and it is still in pre-alpha. This will be the mest MMORP game if it continues to progress the way it already has and it remains free to everyone! =)
Hey, I havent tried this game yet, but it looks very promising due to the awsome screenshot at the top and how you guys are talking about it. Well, I cant wait till it is done, I’ll keep this site in mind and check up on it every once in a while, keep up the work on it!

you download either the windows package or the linux package, and then all 5 parts and the run_me_first.bat
I think this page here needs a little update ;)
PlaneShift has underrun big changes and additions in the last year(s) which include:
- numerous big areas (Hydlaa, Akkaio, the wild, Deathrealm, Dungeons, sewers..)
- the fighting system got more and more balanced, including numerous weapons and armors
- a big crafting system got implemented in the last release
- many NPCs with quests and a lot of miscellaneous items including magic got implemented
However, PlaneShift is still meant to be an MMO_RP_G, meaning the emphasize lies on the RP, not like in other MMOs on dreadmealing.
It is also not true that PS will have fees in the future.
The numbers of players are going up each week to about 180 max so far.

I’d like to take Splash Damage’s , "Enemy Territory" off the dodgy free game list.. I mean, it’s like a mod, where u don’t even have to buy the original game. And it’s free.. Sure only 6 maps and two campaigns.. But I haven’t had as much fun multiplayer wise, since the good ol days of Tribes 2..
What was the article about free games a while back.. I’d like to see more served up to PC users..
