Sony Unveils PSX
“Sony will release a new hardware platform dubbed the ‘PSX’. The PSX will feature both DVD and HDD recording functions; the former supporting both DVD /-R and DVD-R and the latter offering a HDD capacity of 120 GB. The unit will feature an installed TV/BS tuner and an Internet adapter, and will also support USB2.0. Memory sticks will also be supported by the unit.
The disc insertion system of the PSX will utilize a slot mechanism, and will feature the same Emotion Engine chip and graphics synthesizer as its predecessor the PS2. By featuring a real-time OS that is to be used for games, the unit will be capable of high-definition and high-speed recording functions.” - ps2.ign.com

WOW! This things looks amazing. Not out for a while though… which makes you wonder how the whole roadmap for the PS3 (and the XBox2) will be affected. Japanese site AV Watch has more photos and videos showing the speed of the video browsing interface.

One thing that’s important to note is that this is from Sony Corp., NOT Sony Computer Entertainment. The difference is that the HDD / DVD recording / Ethernet / USB 2 Memory Stick etc stuff will not be considered part of the standard PS2 hardware system (though they can be supported by developers - we alread have PS2 games that use the HDD and ethernet). So please, no 32X / Mega CD jokes or cracks about how add ons never work. The PSX isn’t an add-on. This is totally different :)
