Freelancer - The Next Big Thing?
There’s been a lot of press recently about Microsoft’s followup to the Wing Commander/Privateer series, Freelancer. If only half of it is true, the space sim/RPG hybrid due out in March could be something very special. Originally designed as an MMORPG environment, the game has been reduced to single player with a sort of unlimited mulitplayer capability in the vein of NeverWinter Nights. Players will be able to design and host their own persistent worlds, and interlink them. Characters gain experience and develop as in traditional RPGs, but the Freelancer Universe gives complete freedom of movement and exploration. Just like Privateer (which borrowed a lot of ideas from space trading classic Elite), players will be able to follow the main story, or ignore it completely. Controversially, joystick control will not be supported, movement being controlled by the mouse/keyboard combination made familiar by First Person Shooters (I for one think that is a smart move). If the screenshots are anything to go by, Freelancer is going to be a sweet title.
