Freelancer - The Next Big Thing?

There’s been a lot of press recently about Microsoft’s followup to the Wing Commander/Privateer series, Freelancer. If only half of it is true, the space sim/RPG hybrid due out in March could be something very special. Originally designed as an MMORPG environment, the game has been reduced to single player with a sort of unlimited mulitplayer capability in the vein of NeverWinter Nights. Players will be able to design and host their own persistent worlds, and interlink them. Characters gain experience and develop as in traditional RPGs, but the Freelancer Universe gives complete freedom of movement and exploration. Just like Privateer (which borrowed a lot of ideas from space trading classic Elite), players will be able to follow the main story, or ignore it completely. Controversially, joystick control will not be supported, movement being controlled by the mouse/keyboard combination made familiar by First Person Shooters (I for one think that is a smart move). If the screenshots are anything to go by, Freelancer is going to be a sweet title.

That one screenie alone makes me want this game… NOW!

“Never judge a book by its cover ”

Thats what I believe in . I was a avid fan of the old the Amiga and played Elite-Frontier for many hours and to date no game has ever come close to the freedom to explore within the game. Okay privateer I did’nt buy nor did I buy Wing Commander as most of these games were mission based - no freedom of movement.

I wonder if freelancer will have pirates that attack you in hyperspace or the ability to galactic Hyperjump to another galaxy or universe. What about the waltz tune that was playing whilst attempting to dock manually at a spacestation. Or in Frontier where you can actually land on a planet ,going from space to a earth like atmosphere was awesome .

Looks like we will have to wait and see if this is worth it’s money .
