FPS Meets RTS in Multiplayer
Something novel in the up and coming games category is S2 Games’ Savage which pits teams of players against each other in a “seamless” combination of First Person Shooter and Real Time Strategy action. Players can choose to be commanders and take the RTS tack, or action mode players and take the fight to ground level in normal FPS style. There are two races to choose from, magic casting beasts or tribal weapon toting humans, in online battles of up to 64 people. According to the website:
“Savage is designed so that neither RTS nor Action based play are watered down in any way. RTS fans will have all the control they are used to, such as: tech tree, resource management, and tactical strategy. In turn, the action-based players will play an in-depth fighting game with a heavy emphasis on battle dynamics. Although the two sides work together their roles are very distinct.”

While several games have attempted similar things before (Battlezone, aspects of Tribes 2 etc.), Savage seems to be taking the FPS/RTS combination to another level. There isn’t much to see of the game yet, apart from a slick E3 trailer (worth the 30MB+ download), but if the screenshots are anything to go by it could be something to watch out for.
