Possible Terrorist Warning Apology

I would like to apologise to all of those who read my story yesterday about a possible terrorist attack on the Adelaide Christmas Pageant, let’s just say that I was on the receiving end of a bad joke, an “Urban Myth” if you like.

For more great “Urban Myths” check out Snopes.com… *sigh*

*ORIGINAL POST* (WARNING: the following story is an Urban Myth)

Not gaming related I know, but this is something that I think is important.

A neighbour of mine told me this just last night… Their daughter and a friend were in the city (Adelaide) the other day and noticed a man drop his wallet while walking past (the man did not notice), the friend picked it up and pursued the man to give it back. He thanked her very much and asked if she wanted $50 or so for her efforts (the wallet was apparently bulging), she said there is no need… He said there must be something he can do for her, he then said OK, since you have been so honest I will give some advice instead; “Do not go to the Christmas Pageant”. When asked why he replied “Terrorists”, and that was that, he walked off.

The man was of Middle Eastern appearance.

Hopefully this is nothing to worry about, but I felt you all have the right to know… In any case, please tell anyone you know that is planning on going to the Adelaide Christmas Pageant this year (November 9th), the Police have also been informed of this information.

Thanks for reading.

Bollocks.

I heard an almost identicle story earlier this week, although some details were different - they are: the city was Brisbane; the wallet contained $10,000; when they returned the wallet to the man he offered them $1,000; and after turning down the reward the advice he gave them was, “Don’t go to Indy.”

Although people have a right to know about info like this, the story is a rumour and hardly credible. I would suggest thinking twoce before posting stories like this if you haven’t heard it from a reliable source. We don’t need to scare people any more than they already are in our current climate.

This story is bogus, and part of an urban myth that has been spreading around for quite a while now. We live in dangerous times, the last thing we need is nonsense like this.

For more information go and visit www.snopes.com (urban myth resource center). Check under the category of “rumours of War” SCroll down and you will see the story of “Kindness done to a stranger, results in a warning not to drink Coca-Cola after a certain date” OF course the stranger was of Middle Eastern appearance. The story often mutates into warnings of different events..but its the same frame-work as appears on Big Kid.

Shadow you should have a word to your neighbour, as he obviously is having you on. Maybe a retraction on this site would be nice as well, so people can be set straight. Better ring the cops back as well.

Well I believe what my neighbour says, she is not the kind of person who would make up a story like this… She is a 40 odd year old woman with a family and we get along very well.

How can it be part of an urban myth when my neighbours daughter and her friend are the ones who had this encounter and in turn told their mother? It’s hardly like them telling her that a friend of a friend told them or something… I would also not think her daughter would make something up like this either, she is not like that.

I understand where you guys are coming from, but when you hear it from someone you respect you tend to give them the benefit of the doubt. My neighbour is also the one who rang the police.

If this “Middle Eastern Looking” person is the one behind the joke, well it’s a pretty sick joke… But I guess it would be a good thing if this was the case (a joke and not real).

Oh well, hopefully we do have nothing to worry about like I said…

Shadow

just one other thing, I am not telling you guys this so you don’t go (that is up to you)… This would mean that they have won if we all decide to hide in our homes in fear of being blown up, I am more so telling you this so you can be alert and aware if you do go.

The police have said that they will increase security… They should probably do this anyway, I say that it’s better to be safe than sorry… No one expected any of the “other” recent events to happen either, although there were warnings.

Shadow

LOL, this is an email which has been floating around on the ‘net for quite awhile (about a year at least to my knowledge), I know because I have received it twice on two different accounts with minor detail changes.

Sorry shadow, i’m pretty sure your neighbour is just plagarising this email for a bit of fun.

This is the latest is Cyber Terrorism, don’t you see terrorism is not about blowing people up and killing people it’s about everyone in the public being scared of what might occur. Thus take notice of who ever may hurt them.

Ignore this shit and kill of the fucking cunks who try to hurt us

Rak

I love the way some of the people who have replied here can say like it’s fact that “This is an email” … “This story is bogus” …

How the hell would you know?

Who I have heard this from does NOT even have a computer (nor does the daughter) and are not the type of people to play a joke like this and I would trust them with my life…

If I were the one who picked up this persons wallet and they warned me of an impeding attack, I would not neccasarily believe them (I would take it with a extremely large grain of salt)… But if I were to tell someone about my encounter, I would expect them to listen and believe me!

It’s not a bullshit story, what I have told you is FACT!!!

You’re right in a way Rakeesh, it’s like what I said just above… I can believe that the encounter was real, but the content of the conversation is probably just for the scare factor.

If we hide, they have won.

Guys, PLEASE keep some sanity about you! This is classic urban myth fodder. It’s complete rubbish, it’s been floating around since last September - have a think about it? Why would some terrorist suddenly not only take pity on you, but tell you some piece of crucial information that could bring the whole thing down? Why would someone who has $1,000/$10,000/$20,000 in their wallet (it changes depending on who tells you) not be able to afford to reward you?

I expect more from Bigkid … :(

*slips off to drink Progestorex-laced drink with Nigerian businessmen who have agreed to pay me 80 million dollars*

This is a variation of “The Goodness of Strangers” Story.

http://www.snopes.com/rumors/cocacola.htm

Of Course Shadow, in your case it maybe completely true. In which case your neighbours, daughter should go to the police and give a very good description of the man and his car.

Being a Brisbanite, I’d warn everyone to stay away from Adelaide.. Period:)

A friend of mine was working in Hong Kong a couple of months ago in a hotel, and one of the guests who was of middle eastern appearance, left his wallet at reception. She chased him down and gave it to him. He was very thankful and said “Don’t go to Hard Rock Cafe”. She asked him why, and he responded, “The foods awful”

I’m not saying that the warning is false, but I’ve heard it several times from different people referencing different events/places (not including the above joke)

This sort of legend has been around for a while, but really took off after 9/11/01 in the USA. Now only a few weeks after Bali it starts here.

Keep up the good reporting BigKid!

Let me recommend the following sites:

You been had shadow. My sister sent me the exact same tale in October 2001. A lot of Arab men seem have trouble with dropping their wallets!

Of course… some of the counter-arguments raised in this thread don’t necessarily hold water either. There are many confirmed reports of members of the Arab community giving warnings about imminent NYC attacks in the weeks and days leading up to 9-11. Good fuel for paranoia.

Apologies to BigKid readers.. glad to see some of you are awake :)

OK OK I give in, you guys win… I would say that my neighbour, daughter and myself and anyone else who they have told (my neighbour says that she is telling as many people as possible) have been had, I admit it. I just found out that my neighbours daughter was NOT in fact at the encounter, but a friend of hers told her the story and then she in turn told her mother.

Who knows where it began, the friend possibly? … In any case, now I believe that it is a bad joke… And after reading all of these other examples it further confirms it.

Ho hum… Now excuse me while I crawl back under my rock.

Shadow

WOW Shadow The first thread that’s actually got some peeps speakn!

Nice to see the big kid community actually exists!
