Quakecon News

Tom’s has posted their day 1 and day 2 impressions from Quakecon 2002. Of most interest is day 2, which talks about Doom III and Carmack’s keynote. Seems that they are aiming for GeForce 3 level tech to run the game smoothly - Doom III will feature six custom back ends to take advantage of the specific features of the video cards. Currently this will only apply to cards from ATI, NVidia, and 3D Labs. And if you love upgrading hardware, “I still think that there is a 100X improvement possible in video card technology over the next several years”, which should keep the cash registers ringing if true. The new engine features 5.1 sound support, and he’s encouraging people to make that a standard for their PC rigs.
