Games <> Films

In slightly depressing news, it seems that both Aliens vs Predator & RTCW are to be made into movies. The guy who has landed the unlikey job of directing AvP is Paul Anderson (unfortunately not Paul Thomas Anderson who made Magnolia), who’s previous pedigree includes Resident Evil and (groan) Mortal Kombat. Then again, the Aliens franchise couldn’t get any worse after Winona - could it ?

Actually … Aliens vs Predator is one of Hollywood’s most famous unmade scripts. It’s been circulating in bootleg for about a decade (you can read it at Drew’s Script-O-Rama Doubt it will be a spoiler … it’s probably several drafts old) and I think several attempts have been made to make it but they have all fallen through. In fact, the game was made on the basis of the unmade movie that so many people were busting to see.

As that timeless prophet Alanis Morrissette said … isn’t it ironic.

What was it originally? I remember seeing a trashy looking Alien vs Predator comic in shops ages well before the game was made.

(apologies to fans of this bizarre SF mongrel creation)

I’m pretty sure it was the movie (or at least, the idea for it) that came first. The reason that games, comics, and so on have come out based on it is that everyone had more or less given up on the possibility of it ever being made … but still loved the idea of it.

Do I love the idea of it?

Uhhh … *puzzled look* not my kettle of microfiche

The first AvP comic I saw (and where the idea came from, I believe) was the prologue to the AvP limited series by Darkhorse Comics. It was terrifically drawn, and contained a philosphical conversation between two spacers running in parrallel over the top of imagery of the predator ships seeding planets with alien eggs for hunting purposes.

The series itself was more straightforward comic stuff, but still good. The _second_ series started to lose focus.

Anywhoot, I reckon the film has the potential to be good … depends on what they do with the characters, and who directs it.

Well.. I read through those.. And well.. I want to know why they haven’t gone down the “Batman Vs. Predator” lines.. It was so honest to goodness Krudd that I really thought it would be made into a film.

While I am there on the Vs subject, Batman Vs. Judge Dredd.. Freddy Vs. Jason… I think so far they have only made Kramer Vs Kramer, Joe Versus the Volcano, Jackie Chan Vs Wang Wu, Billy the Kid Vs Dracula, Asterix Vs Caesar, Earth Vs Flying Saucers, The People Vs Larry Flynt and Godzilla Vs (insert Godzilla foe here).

Kramer Vs. Kramer was nothing like the comic though, it didn’t even have the guy from Seinfeld in it. :)

All I can say is they’d better not stuff this up
