Splash on the Radio…

At the risk of wallowing in my own self-importance (which rob, monty and bruce will tell you I do at every given opportunity), tonight I’ll be appearing on Radio National at 9PM during the “Night Club” program. Libby Gore (Elle McPheast) will be hosting and along with me will be BigKid-regular Camille Scaysbrook and Simon (whose last name I forget) from Shock Records in Melbourne. We’ll be talking about video games and their transference to the big screen.
The idea behind it (at least what I’m being told by the ABC Producer) is that they want to start talking about games as they are becoming increasingly more culturally significant, but their regular audience aren’t exactly hardcore gamers so they are starting it off in territory that a greater audience can relate to.

This page will give you a frequency that you can tune into to listen to the show, and even if you don’t tune in, drop them a line tomorrow telling them what an interesting show it was and how there should be more discussion of video games in the media. Hopefully this kind of thing will become more common-place and this funny little hobby of ours will start to receive the cultural attention it deserves.

Congratulations Splash, I’ll be listening in.

Notting Hill??? NOTTING HILL!!??

Hugh Grant nightmares aside, great interview!

And who would’ve thought Camille was a BigKidder AND a ZGeeker :-)

Great discussion, just caught it online via here.

I thought the questions from Libby were relatively good… although she’s obviously not into games, she was trying hard to appreciate what’s involved, and give the panel a chance to explain the medium to non-gamers.

I hope there’s more of this… the more exposure there is the less stupid questions we’ll have to cringe through :)

(ps. props to Camille for mentioning BigKid)

Hehee … you did a good job Splash! (it’s Camille here BTW) Libbi Gore was a lot of fun too (the first thing she did when I walked in was to give me a chocolate, so she’s all right by me ;) ). The producer who invited us along said that Radio National are really eager to do more games stories, so who knows! You could be subjected to us again! :)

Heheh…yes Notting Hill…that’s gonna haunt me for a while ;)

Good job Splash

It was quite strange -istening- to people discuss game culture for a change. Strange and entertaining. Libby was a great sport, considering her totally newbie-ism, and it was relieving to see she didn’t always go for the easy/cliche questions throughout the chat. ^_^; It would be good if games discussion could stand on its own, instead of constantly being placed within the context of film. I guess we’re going to have to wait until the console industry targets baby boomers (or until they all expire!).

Do you guys remember “The Zone”. That show started out so great, but then seemed to degenerate into an alternate/grunge scene mouthpiece and subsequently perished. I think there’s huge potential for a game oriented tv show right now considering the current void. Even two shows - one for the younger (attention defecit) gamer, and one for the substance gamer.

What do you guys think?

A friend and I have tried long and pretty hard to get a pilot for a gaming TV show off the ground. We approached all the networks in Sydney, and the cable channels, and there was just zero interest. Really weird, especially given the amoung of $ splashing around in game marketing.

We eventually began to realise that the problem was with the way we were pitching it - which was as a serious show for serious gamers. Something late night, before Rage, etc. I think if we went in with a couple of Daddo’s fronting it, guest reviews from Plugger, and lots of frothy marketing garbage, it would be a go-er. Something like the G4 gaming channel in the US, with episodes hosted by Wil Wheaton aka Star Trek Next Generation’s incredibly annoying Welsey Crusher.

But who wants to sell their souls in that way ?? [ducks as CV’s thunder in :-)]

Wil Wheaton to .. attract (?) .. trek oriented gamers. Someone in the marketing department really reversed the polarity of common sense on that one. >_

The producers deliberately chose movie/game adaptations as a jumping-off point for more specialised game discussions in the future. A lot of their listeners would have a pretty erudite understanding of other artforms like films and music, but will need to be eased in slowly to the idea that games actually have cultural and artistic significance.
