America’s Army : Operation Recon

Short and sweet - Americas Army : Operation Recon has been released, grab it from Ausgamers. It looks like the server is being pounded, I’m only getting 100kb/sec…I usually get 600kb/sec. The teaser/demo is around 200mb so those with modems or 3GB download caps might have to think long and hard about this one.

This release is more of a teaser for greater things to come and contains some single player missions as well as some multiplayer scenarios. Get it now, it’s FREE! The complete package which will also be released later this year will also be FREE!

Some people have been saying that this is “American Army Propaganda” to them I say “meh, it’s FREE and it’s apparently quite good (I’ll find out soon enough).

Of course, the game is only true-to-life if you’re constantly bombed by US planes, no matter which side you’re on.
(and US planes suddenly appear and bomb you while playing any other game or using any innocent application you have installed on your PC.)

Well the gun jamming and the slow in and out breathing is a cool effect.. But the instant lag and the high Vid card spec for a game that is retooled from what looks like the flashpoint engine (I remember the USARMY licensed flashpoint and Ghost Recon Engines, there were news stories about this at the time it happened) retooled to kill my geforce1. So I guess I will have to get that Geforce 3 or 4 afterall.

But not enough Aussie servers as this is more tactical then arcade based. It will catch on slowly. I guess the Australian Ghost Recon clans will hop on it for a while. And the whole thing is supposedly FREE. Which begs the question is this a new subgenre of the genre.. This is more like a promotional kit, a damn good one.. Well Better then the Dominos Pizza Free Game.. And could very well be on a par with “Pepsi Man”.

Will the police force release a SWAT type game. Will the Air Force release a Flight Sim, Will the Navy release a battle Group and Admiralty loving sim? Will traditional game developers look for publishing contracts where they get paid to make the game and then patch it but expect no retail kickbacks.. Even when the thing is downloaded for Free by over 300,000 ppl in a couple of days. Who knows how much it would have sold if it hit the shelves. It would’ve been considerably less, as my guess.

The developers of the game hit fame with titles like KINGPIN, so I guess they are happy with the cash they already had and after 9-11 USA needs that military enlistment boost.. What better way to reach an audience that would not mind joining up.

Long gone are the Bumper Stickers and sample bags. The coolest Australian defence force Recruitment things I have around the house is a Frisbee and couple of posters. Perhaps the Aust Govt could also go for a some software like this. Surely the television and advertising campaign could have it’s costing redirected once they looked into the way games are developed and their target audience.

So far I have only played one war sim as an Australian and that was a MOD for Combat Flight Sim 2 called “RAAF in defence of Australia”.

Turning off the rant gas now.. :)
