50 Greatest games ?

The emag insert in today’s Sydney Morning Herald features that old chestnut, the Top 50 Games of All Time. As usual it will be hotly debated, and these guys aren’t aficionados, but for the record, here are the top 5:

  • 5. Diablo
  • 4. Quake & Quake II
  • 3. Sid Meier’s Civilisation
  • 2. Half-Life
  • 1. Doom
Hmmm. 5 PC games, 3 built on ID software engines ? The closest consoles get are FFVII and Tomb Raider at numbers 7 and 10 respectively.

Oh dear. Oh dear indeed. Will have to go get the paper at lunchtime before I make any comment, but that list is not promising…

It gets worse. A little later in the same issue, the same writer puts the Xbox, PS2 and GameCube head to head. Contrary to popular opinion, he manages to conclude that the Xbox controller “is the most comfortable on the market for real adults to use…[whereas the PS2 controller] is simply too small for many adult male hands”. Real adults ? As opposed to pretend adults I guess. And the Xbox appears to win the scrap mainly due to it’s Polygon Pushing Power rather than actually having decent games. Then again, he also says that “Wreckless” is a ‘must own’ title. Sigh.

I would not rate Halo above Super Mario 64 and Tomb Raider should not be that high either. Something tells me that the creator of this “Top 50″ would have been in heaven a few months ago when the Xbox hype went into overdrive. Compiling the list requires restraint, to avoid the ‘latest thing’ from climbing the ladder, when some people are confused between the latest game they have played and the greatest game they have played.

Hmm is there really such a thing as a classic game or greatest game or top game of all time? Don’t think so, you may have some great memories created by these games but over time games generally do improve. I had awesome memories of so old coin op games from the fish n chip shop when I was younger and when emulation took of I thought cool I can go and play some of those again just the way I remember them arcade perfect. Heh lasted for all 4 seconds while I thought did I really enjoy this at one stage? then about a year ago I had the brainstorm of conning some mates into doom and duke3d, again games that created great memories but by today’s standards they are pathetic to look at and not as much fun as playing a modern day fps networked. So I think its more a personel thing derived from the memories you have of certain games.
