Tell me if you’ve heard this one before…

A report in this morning’s Victorian Herald-Sun tabloid has led to the banning of all computer games in Victorian prisons. The report, which has to be read to be believed, claims that allowing prisoners to play these games is just plain wrong. A few edited highlights:

VICTORIA’S worst inmates are playing violent computer games where they kill, run down bystanders, escape jail and flee police in high-speed chases.
Pumped up by their violent video exploits, inmates can also buy specialist bodybuilding supplements to bulk up.
“It’s wrong. The public need to know that their taxes are paying $60,000 a year to keep each of these blokes and they’re playing these sort of games.”
I’m speechless.

Championship Surfer played by the cons? Go Krome!

Yeah - they violently carve up the wave, then go pump some real iron. I often feel like pumping some weights after a heavy CStrike session ;-p

And I’m sure the guys in the slammer are learning a whole lot of new tricks from playing GTA3. I can just picture them only allowing back in a Sims mod that only lets them to be nice to other people. That’ll work - who needs rehabilitation when you have games to do the job (or not) for you…

Okay, I can see reason in not letting inmates play M rated games. You’re a bad boy, so no Doom III for you. But this could have the opposite effect. I know I’d go postal if I had to play games like Barbie’s Dream House or similar. @;-)

They can buy bodybuilding supplements.

“Range of sedate titles from which to choose, including Crash Bandicoot, Championship Surfer, Simpsons Wrestling and Dukes of Hazzard Racing.”

Crash Bandicoot is a science experiment, no? Spose inmates could become Mad Scientists. Yeah, we need more of them @:-D And Simpsons Wrestling? OMG!!!11 WRESTLING! WRESTLING EQUALS VIOLENCE! And Dukes of Hazzard, well you know they’re only playing it to checkout Daisy. But Championship Surfer? Play it till the cows come home (or parole comes up) I say! Watch out for Ty, prisoners! You’ll love it!

They can buy bodybuilding supplements.

Why shouldnt they be able to play computer games?
as if the punishment of being imprisoned is not enough, I am sure the effects of video games on a prison population as on any other population is insignificant. I am sure the damage done to the minds of inmates would have to come from actual violence and boredom and of course drugs.
It’s a shame the media doesnt try and reflect more
compassionate ideology towards non main stream
sections of the comunity than just hate.

Note to Self: Purchase 500g box of Corn Flakes - novelty Journalism degree within could be my ticket to gainful employment.

Feel free to call me a fascist, but I’m of the opinion that you fore-go your rights as an every day citizen when you make choices that land you in jail. Compassion towards non-main stream sections of the community is just fine. Feeling sorry for someone because they took a life? That’s rediculous.
