Optus’ Strange New Pricing

Optus’ recent broadband soft cap has produced the obligatory new pricing schemes, and the telco seems to be a bit confused. Subscribers will actually pay more per MB the bigger the plan they opt for. In other words, it is actually cheaper to spend less money with Optus than more. Dan from Dan’s Data has a full exposition. In a somewhat ironic turn I had to email Dan to get the full IP for the link as Telstra’s Domain Name Server doesn’t yet recognise his (several years old) site. It would all be funny if we had another choice.

and I repeat “There is nothing wrong with the Australian Broadband industry”, just ask Senator Alston.

Sure you can’t use it as it was intended or it will cost you 100s of dollars a month, but only warez kiddies, pr0n leechers and little kids playing games (because that’s the only people that play games) use the internet for more than checking email.

Here’s a question… Why would you bother getting Optus now? It’s a difficult process at best and now it is the same as every other broadband service.

Yes Ken it would be funny…

Optus is still cheaper than Telstra, even if you don’t take the choices 4 and 5 plan for $69 you can pay $79 for the standard 3gb cable plan. Telstra on the other hand is $87 for 3gb. The “broadband” situation in Australia is now very bleek.

I intend to remain on Optus, because I still have fears about switching over to ADSL. However you can be sure that I will be installing a download monitor and watching it like a hawk. At least it doesn’t come into effect for 2 months.

What a crazy marketing-driven world we live in when such a scheme is preposterous.
