The real benefit of blogging is that due to the open source community it requires no technical knowledge to create or maintain a site. If you can click a mouse button you can do it. The community has established some format standards which allow free sites to offer not only automated setup and maintenance, but one-click remote skinning with templates made by other users that change the look and feel of a site instantly. Of course, if you want to you can customize and design your own without limitation. In short, a blog is what homepages should have been.
