PC gaming is dead; long live PC gaming
Tom’s Hardware have an excellent report on Microsoft’s latest WinHEC (Hardware Engineering Conference) event. Along with coverage of Freestyle, Mira and Longhorn (MS’s next Windows enhancements and versions), there is a new spin on the Xbox. The consensus from the conference seems to be that the Xbox will remain primarily a gaming device. The reason for this theory is that this then frees up the PC to become the home entertainment hub via Freestyle, Mira, etc.
Sure, you can play games on a PC, and play DVDs on an Xbox, but Microsoft would rather you saw Xbox as being focused on games, and so it left the PC to become a media server, CD jukebox, television central, and all around family friend. This is interesting, as it’s kind of the reverse of previous opinion of the Xbox being a trojan horse PC. But it makes sense - it’s hard to make people buy a new PC for faster Word, but if it can control your house, that’s another matter.
