European/Australian GCN release date

Computer and Video Games.com released information detailing the release date for the Gamecube in Europe/Australia. This isn’t 100% official as Nintendo itself haven’t released any information, but they seem to be pretty confident about this information and so do Planetgamecube. Now without further ado the date is

MAY 3rd 2002. The GCN will be released for £150 ($410). For comparisions sake the PS2 is currently selling at £200 ($547) and the Xbox which will be released on 14th March 2002 will be a staggering £300 ($821). Hopefully the GCN will be released here with a $400 which would look very attractive to gamers in Australia on a tight budget.

While nothing was mentioned about Australia we are considered to be in the same region as Europe since we use the same PAL system for TV’s etc. Check out the entire article here, and I suppose we’ll see whether or not they’re right in a few days when it’s supposed to be announced officially.

UPDATE : Australian release date announced - Nintendo Australia has confirmed that GameCube will be launching down under on the 17th of May, just 2 weeks after the European launch. As with the European launch, 20 games will be out at launch and the system will be available in two colors: Indigo and Black. Nintendo Australia won’t be setting a price but indicated you should expect to pay around 399 Australian dollars. Only 50,000 units will be available at launch, though hopefully more systems will soon follow. Thanks to Tendo Box and Planetgamecube.

Hmmm - is it too late ? With no advertising (yet) how is the General Public going to make an informed decision when it comes to choosing between an Xbox NOW and a GameCube later. Having said that, if they can bring it in at that price point…that would be very nice, and give MS and Sony something to think about. Why are they so reticent about giving out official prices and dates ?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo didn’t really have a firm release date as well as pricing information until VERY recently. It was also quite sensible on Nintendo’s part to wait until after the GCN launched in the US to see how well it was received and how many units they would be needing in the following months.

If the GCN was selling poorly in the US I would imagine that the release date for Europe and Australia to be much sooner than it actually is. Since the GCN is selling well where it has been launched (US and Japan) then I believe they have made these countries their top priorities…Europe and Australia be Damned!

All I want is freakin’ “Animal Forest +” damnit!

$821 for an X-Box? The official RRP is $649!
