Devil May Cry Impressions (PS2)

Devil May Cry arrived in Australian shores early in December and although the review is too late for Christmas it IS here now. If you’re wondering whether or not this game is worth $90 then check it out below.

I consider myself to be a reasonable gamer when it comes down to skill. I’m not brilliant, but I don’t play FPS games using the “arrow” keys either. I just found myself having the greatest amount of difficulty with this game. I got passed the first few levels no problem, but as soon as I hit the first boss (the giant lava spider) I died….and died…and died. Now I know that the Boss or mini-boss in this case are supposed to be difficult to defeat but this was pathetic!! When I say this was pathetic I’m talking about my level of gaming ability.

I eventually defeated the mini-boss only to encounter another one on the next level, I died again but after my second death I decided “Screw this I’m going to play Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance”. Now I can’t blame the game for my inadequacies but now I’m playing on *shudder* easy. I can’t remember the last time I played a game on easy, I feel ashamed.

Apart from the fact that I play shockingly, what I have seen of the game thus far is reasonable (I’m up to level 9). The game is VERY action orientated, which means the storyline could have been left out with no detrimental effect on the game whatsoever.

Now onto the graphics, a much talked about feature of this game. PAL releases are sometimes perfect, you honestly wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between an NTSC game and it’s PAL twin…this is unfortunately not the case with Devil May Cry. Australian gamers that purchase Devil May Cry will not only get the game but will get GIANT black borders! At first I thought, oh I must be running it in widescreen mode, but no such option exists. The black borders are revolting and inexcusable. If other games aren’t blessed with the highly arousing black borders than why should Devil May Cry have them? It makes no sense. People of Australia/Europe, stand tall and no longer take inferior PAL releases sitting down, stand up and let your voice be heard! *Rant over*

Sound effects thumbs up, music thumbs down The sound effects are what you would expect when you hit a ghoul with a giant sword, well what I would expect at least. The music is fast paced just like the rest of the game but it’s incredibly repetitive, more music tracks would have gone down VERY well. The music does change though depending on whether or not you’re in a fight or just wandering around trying to find one.

So what it comes down to is whether or not you should buy this game? Personally I would rent it first. Some people will LOVE the game because of its fast paced arcade type gameplay. Others will play it and get bored quite quickly; it’s advisable to find out which group you are in first before you lay down your $90.

On normal difficulty it certainly is hard, especially the bosses, their vulnerabilities aren’t quite as vulnerable. I finished it on easy, well, quite easily, and I’m finding normal difficulty more challenging. If I’m not mistake, you encounter different (and tougher) monster variants in the normal difficulty which is a plus (and hopefully more variants when you beat it and play through again on the harder difficulties). Also, some (if not most) of the mini-bosses seem to have different attacks/vulnerabilities in normal difficulty - that, or I just killed them too quickly on easy.

Renting it for a few days probably is the go as Bob suggested, as there’s not a whole lot of replayability here. I continue to play it for about an hr most days, and am finding it still fun to blast ‘n slash my way through, trying tactics/combos I didn’t really use the first run through on easy-auto.

Now, has there been any mention of Devil Never Cry yet?
