Anand does Console Hardware

Excellent hardware site AnandTech have posted the first in their “Hardware Behind the Consoles” series, taking a look at (you guessed it) the Xbox hardware. The good news is they will soon feature similar articles on the PS2 and GameCube.

Great link.

Although 90% of the technical stuff went right over my head I found it the most indepth and hands-on review yet.

Why didnt Microsoft put and extra 64 MB of RAM in????

Cant wait for the Gamecube analaysis.

Anand is a great site. After reading the review I won’t be in a hurry to get an XBox.

I may end up with one long term. That is after they drop in price and there is a world zoned progressive DVD option for it.

Overall it seems a few corners were cut (bandwidth on video, overall memory, etc) that will limit the life of this console.

Then again that’s probably intentional. With nVidia behind the video side of things there is little reason (aside from consumer revolt) that we couldn’t see an XBox2 within a year.

Or maybe we’ll see a variation on it. It’s just begging to be integrated with a HDTV tuner, a larger hard drive and a PVR.

XBox+ for the higher end consumer perhaps… I can but dream. :)

I’m sure it will happen it’s just probably going to be 3-10 years away still.
