Infogrames to put AU$50million into Australasia

An anonymous submitter posted in this info from AGDC…

Just been at the Australian Game Developers Conference, where Bruno Bonnell of Infogrames announced his company is putting an extra AU$50,000,000 into game development in Australasia for the next year (thats just for one year)! Sounds like the money is for new titles independant of the Infogrames Melbourne House projects, to be spent on whatever games are deemed worthy of investment.

We haven’t confirmed this yet, but it sounds like a strong vote of confidence in Australia’s game development industry.

(agh, damn forced preview)

I was there on Friday, and can confirm that he said that in his keynote speech.

His main push in his speech was using outsouced programming teams and art/design teams, that don’t coexist. Seems a bit odd and counter-decent development, but I guess in theory it could work.

agh x 2. That was me :)

This is good news for local development teams. Maybe as well as the established companies, several small independents will be able to corner some of that money and get the chance to make some exciting, original stuff. At the least they may be able to do a publisher-pleasing title and use it to get to a position where they can do what they really want to. Australia has a wealth of (as yet unjaded) talent in this industry, and I think the US is beginning to understand that - not to mention they get that talent at a bargain price.

It’s not just limited to Australia, there is a wealth of talent all across the Australasia region. I think this will help a lot of small companies in and around Australia.
