12 - 1 = 11.  11 Days left

Now before you read any further I must stress that the Gamecube countdown only applies for the US readers or any readers that are importing a Gamecube.

Anyway the 11th most interesting thing I’m looking forward to is…….The “funky” controller!

I have had a controller sitting in my house since the launch of the console in Japan…yes I was crazy enough to import one. The controller is brilliant to hold, it really does melt into your hand. All the buttons are easily accessible (apart from the Z button) and they do feel like they are in the right place. For those of you unfamiliar with the Gamecube controller here is a picture of a Gamecube controller and Nintendo64 controller side by side.

The Gamecube controller has all the functionality you would expect and as I mentioned before is incredibly comfortable. Both of these aspects are equally as important because there is no point having a controller that doesn’t have enough buttons. On the other hand there is no point having a controller that is so uncomfortable your hands will spasm if you use it for longer than 10 minutes. Why do I have the urge to say X-Box at this point? Hmm must be all that premature advertising.

yeah the GC controller looks to be quite sweet. the only thing that gets my goat about the whole thing is the conservative colour selection…purple and black? come on!

OK - I will bite :-)

I have noticed that I haven’t seen anyone who has played with the X-BOX in a review capacity mention the size of the controller.

If you don’t have little kiddy hands then the X-BOX controller should be fine IMHO

Would that be because they’re reviewing a *game*, not the *console*?

I think most people who are fans of the xbox are
* PC gamers who don’t realise that it doesn’t matter a damn what hardware is in the box
* First adopters who’ll buy anything.

I mean really…find me someone who likes the xbox who can tell me what game they’re looking forward to next year? What? Sorry, couldn’t hear anything over the silence.

Now do the same for a GC fan - Mario Sunshine/Zelda/Metroid come to mind quickly.

Okay - sure this could go down into a flame war of: Mine is better than yours etc etc etc.
Let’s do our best to avoid that :-)

Suffice to say that what I was trying to say is:
Reviewers of the X-BOX (not everyday people) who have gotten their X-BOX’s early to review them - haven’t come out and said the controller sucks. IMHO this counts for a lot, as the bagging of the X-BOX controller by someone who appears to have not held one, is not something I think you should base your judgement about the controller on.
(Not to detract from Bob342, as I am sure he is a nice guy :-)
Now when it comes to the GC controller I would consider Bob342 an expert as he actually HAS one.

As for the X-BOX - I can’t wait! The games I am looking forward to are:
Halo
DOA3
Much’s Odysee
Star Wars Obi-Wan
Star Wars Starfighter - Yes I know Rogue Squadron II on the GC is far better :-(
Tony Hawk 2 X - Haven’t played this yet, so can’t wait.

Air Force Delta storm looks like a lot of Mindless fun as do Jet Set Radio and Cel Damage

I assume you don’t mean 1st gen games like Halo, as they will be released this year in the States ?

Anyway, Halo and the rest of the 1st gen games will be released *here* next year, which leads me to my next question:

Will Halo still be an exclusive X-Box only game next year when the X-Box is finally released in Australia, or will PC and Mac Halo be released by then ? How will that affect X-Box sales here ?

 Bob342 7 years ago

I’m pretty sure that Halo will be an exclusive X-Box title for quite some time. “IF” it comes to the PC I think it’s at least a year away.

The X-Box really doesn’t appeal to me as a gaming console, it doesn’t have enough exclusive titles to warrant a purchase, but that’s just my opinion.

I do not understand the reason why the US X-Box controller is so large. Microsoft recently showcased the Japanese X-Box controller which appears to be a much more sensible size. It has all the functionlity of it’s US counterpart and is about the size of an “average” controller. The N64 controller was big, but you only really used half of it at any given time (normally the analogue stick and the buttons on the right side.

Also I know that IGN has a Japanese and US X-Box controller and they believed the Japanese one should have been the standard.

Funky as the standard controller is, the promised wireless Wavebird controller could be genius. No cables !

HALO will come to the PC - this is a fact and the guys from Bungie (people who made Halo) keep telling us again and again that it will come to PC.

If you look at the Halo packing for the X-BOX it will say ‘exclusive to X-BOX’

This is a marketing slogan and relates to the consoles only. (ie Excluse to X-BOX and not any other console)

Sure the X-BOX might not have many exclusive titles. This doesn’t matter much as it has the best range of titles in my opnion.

Look at how Nintendo handled the N64 - only allowing the best titles to be released - which meant you didn’t have much to choose from, though what you did have was top stuff. It looks like the GC will go down this same path.

With the Playstation not only did you have some great titles - you also had a lot of ’so so’ titles. The PSX ended up having the biggest range of any console. This was one of the great things about the PSX and one of the reasons I bought one.

It looks like the X-BOX will go down this path as well and I for one think that is a great thing. The good thing about having so many titles is that when you have played all the AAA titles - you have some filler that you can rent/borrow etc to play. IMHO this is important as I can’t realy replay a title once I have finished it and found all the secrets.

The GC will be a great machine - though I feel it will end up like the N64 - with Nintendo restricting what can be released on it.
For some people this is a good thing for others not so good.

Maybe Microsofts studies found that their target audience had an average hand size of Yeti! :-)

As much as IGN is a big site - I used to go there all the time - now I only go there when someone else mentions something on it.

I will hold my opnion until I actually hold the controller (whenever it is released here)

 sprayNwipe 7 years ago

Yeah, flame wars of which console is better get tired quickly.

My point is, all of those games bar one are release titles, and the only one that isn’t you say is surpassed by a GC launch title. I can’t think of anything remotely good for the xbox in 2002, while the PS2 had GT3/MGS2 and the GC the titles mentioned above.

JSR and Cel Damage aren’t xbox-exclusive btw - Cel Damage is a December GC title, and JSR is coming to the PS2. Even DOA3 is a PS2 title after 6 months.

See my reply to Bob342 above your post - IMHO It is not about ‘exclusive’ games, it is about the best range.

I feel the X-BOX will have this - blind faith if you will :-)
