CS Cheating Forces Server Closure
It had to happen eventually. A fairly major public server for popular online Terrorist/Counter-Terrorist Half-Life mod Counter-Strike has been forced to close due to uncontrollable cheating. The Utah Freakshow CS servers were discontinued…
…until the Half-Life engine is made more secure against exploitation and the hostility of the CS players toward the admins and their fellow players diminishes.
CS has been plagued with cheating since its inception because both it and the engine upon which it is based are childishly easy to hack. Recent attempts by anti-cheat programs such as Punkbuster have been only partially successful, and many (PB included) have removed support for the game. Strangely, the only people with full access to HL proprietary engine code and the most to gain from improving it - game developer Valve - have been persistently unresponsive to community pressure to do so.
