The Future of Online Gaming (part 3)

Slow News Day have made good with the third question in their special website-launching series where they pose questions to online gaming luminaries - please note this means Richard Garriott, not Gooseman(!).

The third question deals with market saturation, and how close we are to hitting that. Opinions vary from not even close to all full up. Some even go so far as to suggest the things that are holding the market back:

Raph Koster: …frankly, the people who make these games are mostly geeks, mostly guys, and mostly interested in killing things. That’s the same problem that the whole industry has. We shouldn’t forget that EQ is, right now, as successful as most any hit game gets. It’s not an exception like say Diablo or Sims, but it’s a big hit. And the Diablo/Sims type things come along only very rarely, really. Soon we’ll hit the same ceiling that the entire game industry has hit, and probably have similar problems in breaking out of it.
