Del Castillo on Design

Ed Del Castillo, one of the original designers of Command and Conquer has written an article where he discusses his design philosophies and what motivates him to make the choices he does. Ed’s career has seen him work with people such as Richard “Lord British” Garriot and Sid Meier, so though you may not have heard of him before, he is definitely one to watch.

His company’s (Liquid Entertainment) latest game, Battle Realms, is due out before Christmas.

I approach my job from a universe creation perspective. If you create the universe first, you give yourself a rich bed from which you can draw more than just a single game. If you create something deep and succeed at making a good game to boot, your audience will be more emotionally involved with the game. For us, Step One is creating the world, the history, and the story that the game takes place in. From there all other things are possible.
