Aussie Rules and Acclaim Entertainment Team Up

The Australian subsidiary of US company Acclaim Entertainment has signed a four year deal with the Australian Football League to develop AFL-based
computer and console entertainment. Acclaim is investing $4 million in the project, which will result in the creation of a series of Australian Rules games for PCs, Sony PlayStation 2, Microsoft X Box, with games for Nintendo Game Boy Advance to follow. Essendon coach and football personality Kevin Sheedy will be the face of the AFL games, the first of which is expected to be released in November.

The deal was announced yesterday by the Victorian Minister for State and Regional Development, John Brumby, who said “up to 500,000 units of the new series of AFL games [are] expected to be sold in the first four years.” The Victorian Government has taken a keen interest in supporting the games entertainment industry over recent years, and views the announcement as a positive endorsement of it’s formal strategy for the industry called “Game Plan”.

A big thanks to Tim Richards for this news.
