Blizzard Media Manipulation

I know Blizzard are an important games company. Yes they’ve produced some great games (Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo - the list goes on). But does any of it justify the media attention they manage to generate any time their media machine burps?

If the indulgent “teaser” announcements in the lead up to today’s unveiling weren’t bad enough, the announcement of their new MMORPG has produced no less than seven posts today on games news guru site Blues, and that doesn’t count the two on Warcraft III. That’s nine - 9 - news posts on the same day on one of the biggest news sites on the net, all pimping products from the same company. That’s if you forget the other two mini-links. I respect Blizzard as much as any gamer, but that level of servitude is just obscene.

The same thing happened when Diablo 2 was announced and developed, and the media mush was so bad a webmaster from one (now defunct) games site emailed the rest of us pleading for sanity. I actually told him to mind his own business, but I’m afraid that now I have to eat my words. Enough already with the WoW (and that acronym says everything that needs to be said about the Blizzard promotion machine) coverage. It’s at least 18 months away for crying out loud.

And yes, I’ll probably play it…*ahem*
