“R” Rating for Games

Brett Robinson is campaigning for the introduction of an R (Restricted 18+) category for games in Australia. The Office of Film and Literature Classification is currently conducting a review of the classification guidelines for films and computer games. Without an R rating being available for classification then we are stuck with the stipid predicament that violent games are banned altogether because beaureacrats don’t want them to fall into the hands of children.

The introduction of an R category for computer games would also dispel the widespread misconception that only children play computer games, and send a very clear message to legislators that the Australian public consider the first principle of the Classification Code (which states that “adults should be able to read, see and hear what they want”) to be a fundamental civil right.

To show your support for this important cause, sign the petitions at www.ozgamers.cjb.net and www.petitiononline.com/ozgamers/.

And don’t hesitate, the classification review only runs until the 31st October. We play games and we vote

Update: Brett emailed us twice about this and because we have been so busy we haven’t posted it till now. This really is a common sense issue, though common sense is something our politicians seem to need spelled out and then rubbed in their faces - especially where technology is concerned. I signed it, and recommend anyone who cares about games does too. [monty, 7.10pm]
