Space: A History

GameSpot have a lengthy piece up looking at the history of space empire games. Starting way back in ‘82 when I was busy playing on my Atari (and while we’re on the subject, nobody ever accuses a two year-old of being anti-social while gaming, I sense a double-standard), Andromeda Conquest kicks off the festivities which move swiftly to the Australian-developed Reach For the Stars, which came from Roger Keating and Ian Trout (Strategic Studies Group) in 1983.

Moving on through the ages, works from studios like Electronic Arts (yes, there once was a time when ground-breaking was the norm for EA) and Micro Prose get a great deal of mention, including the Masters of Orion series. For anyone interested in the history of gaming, it is a terrific piece, very, very interesting.
