Sirtech and Wiz 8 Going Down

Rumour has been rife on the net recently about the state of SirTech and their much-awaited 3D RPG Wizardry 8. A recent interview with company director Ian Currie has confirmed that if things don’t turn around for Sirtech within a few weeks it will be curtains not only for future Wizardry titles, but Wiz 8 as well:

What if Sir-Tech will not find funding? What will happen to the company and to its employees? Do you plan any actions to prevent this situation from getting worse?

Unless we find funding in the next few weeks, the company will close its doors.

This is desperately sad news for those of us who played previous Wizardry titles and have been hanging out for the next one (for five years). Sirtech are/were an old school games company built upon a singular dedication to their titles (a la the old Origin), as opposed to today’s fractured developer/publisher cycle. I for one will be saddened by the demise not only of their corporate entity, but of what they stood for.

As for the release of (finished) Wiz 8, if you are in Russia you are assured of it hitting shelves following a local distribution deal. The rest of us will have to wait and hope that if the company doesn’t survive, the game will in some form. The hope of future games in the series is, in the words of Ian Currie, probably non-existent.
