Payneful
Ritual’s Chris Stockman enthused about newly released 3rd person shooter Max Payne in a recent .plan update, though if you’re interested in story as much as action you should be prepared for some irritation:
I was in a firefight in a small room that was comprised of tiles (you know bathroom style tiling) and every bullet whizzing by me was smashing into the tiles causing all sorts of ruckus. I tell you what I thought I was in a damn John Woo action movie. The style, graphics, and gameplay are all there. I don’t know what else to say. But if you love games, if you love adult games, if you love games with a sense of flare and style you HAVE to buy MP. It’s a must have in my book ‘cause I am a HUGE fan of Hong Kong action flicks!
While the ingame style and action is indeed impressive, having seen the opening sequence I’m amazed yet again that a company can spend so much time and money on the visuals and forget about the plot and dialogue.
Good, deep voiced cop is framed and his family is killed (the obligatory loving wife and child), so must have his vengeance on nasty underworld - how many times can the same plot be regurgitated? I lasted until the line “… the day the pain began.” If you are going to portray heartbreak and angst to adults, you better steer clear of the screaming cliches.
However, I’ve heard from those who’ve played it that if you don’t take the story too seriously it is an excellent, if system intensive experience.
