Star Wars: Galaxies & Participatory Design

Joystick101 have an interesting piece up looking at creating communities in online games and uses the up-coming Star Wars massively-multiplayer title as an example. It raises a number of interesting points which I’m not going to list because I’m moving today. If you’ve got an interest in MMP titles, particularly in the communities that form around them, don’t miss this article.

Designing these communities is difficult, if not an oxymoron. As Amy Jo Kim points out in her book Community Building on the Web, communities can’t be designed; they spontaneously form around common purposes and practices.

There is also a new Star Wars: Galaxies 3D screenshot up on the website - damned if I can get them to work though =)
