Adobe Gets Mean

The Boycott Adobe site has been established to bring attention to the plight of a Russian hacker - Dmitry Sklyarov - who was recently arrested in the US to face criminal charges under the infamous DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act). You may be wondering what horrendous crack this dangerous cyber-criminal had executed… nothing more than creating a file viewer which removes restrictions from encrypted PDF files. This was demonstrated as an example of the deficiencies in ebook security at the recent DefCon conference.

Rather than thank Dmitry for his efforts - or at the very least take some technical responsibility for their product’s security - Adobe called in federal agents and now Dmitry is sitting in a US jail cell awaiting trial. According to a post on slashdot, members of of the EFF are meeting with Adobe representatives today (US time) to negotiate some leniency.

Thanks to Ben for the link. (FYI: BigKid is an Adobe free zone - Macromedia all the way here).
