Max Payne Preview

Scary has been along to 3D Realms and checked out Max Payne (being developed by Remedy Entertainment). Anyone who’s seen screenies or watched the E3 trailer will know that this game is looking awesome, but with a new style of third person control it’s useful to hear some hands-on impresssions…

Very simple, very intuitive, very engrossing, very entertaining. If you like action movies and you like action games you’re all set. If you’re not an action movie lover though this may not be for you. A lot of the enjoyment is derived from the feeling that you are playing in a movie. If that doesn’t appeal to you may want to wait for the demo. There are other redeeming qualities but the cinematic push combined with combat is certainly the strongest.

No jump puzzles. Also sadly, no monster trucks.

Max Payne is played from a 3rd person perspective with a locked camera most of the time. The pivot point of the camera appears to be a point between the camera and the player instead of the way most 3rd person style games are. (Pivot at the player point) The subtle difference makes a FPS player feel a little bit more at home as the movements are a little less disorienting.

In an unusual twist for most 3D games these days, the Max Payne engine is apparently very stable - thanks to some close collaboration with Mad Onion, the company behind 3DMark.
