D2X - All Is Forgiven

My original review of Diablo 2 was positive, but disappointed. D2 is a good game that promised more than it delivered, and let me down acutely in several areas. The recently released (and only just arrived in Oz) Expansion Set makes it all better. D2X introduces two new classes, an extra Act (or level), some truly spectacular Sets (what Blizzard were thinking with the original insipidly underpowered sets I have no idea), powerful crafted items made by combining other items, and Runes which combine in sockets to spell out words that imbue awesome bonuses and powers. In short, it’s all good.

There are, of course, some teething problems including a much hated 1.08 patch that unbalances item drops and pretty much reconfigures some classes by adjusting skill effects (making many player’s hard built main characters almost useless). I was one of the lucky ones. My Paladin benefitted enormously from the changes and is actually much more powerful. An upcoming 1.09 patch promises to address many of the inconsistencies, though not the class changes.

I could write several pages (and may do in the future when I can pull myself away from the game for long enough) but the gist of all I would say is that D2X turns D2 into the game it always should have been. If you are a Diablo fan, you will love it. At AUS$50 it is worth every cent.
