Quake’s Fifth Birthday

Definitive 3D shooter Quake is apparently five years old this weekend, and co-creator John Romero has waxed lyrical on his domain (yes, he has a domain with his own name) about the game he “loves like a son”:

But to me, there’s just something about Quake 1, the original, that keeps pulling me back into its dark embrace. I think… it’s the rawness, the edgy violence and the unsettling, menagerie of wild creatures we pulled from the nethercore of our mind’s eye and then placed among the tattered ruins and ancient walkways of Quake’s wind-blown crevices and scenic vistas.

As I said… waxed lyrical. The man can rave on, but it makes an interesting read. As a sort of birthday present, he has included a long lost map created by id around the time of QTest and has never been released until now.
