19 Inches of Real Estate
After several years of squinting into my old but trusty 15″ Samsung monitor, I have finally splashed out of the porthole and into a 19″ ocean vista. Ah, the freedom; the expansive view; the visual confusion. The thing is so big that for the first time I can’t focus on the entire screen. I think my eyes are still in sensory overload, and it may take a while to get used to using my peripheral vision. For the technically minded it has 18″of viewable screen, is capable of 1600x1200 at 75MHz (though I don’t recommend it as everything’s too small; 1280x1024 is fine), and has a dot pitch of 22mmH/.14mmV. Using good old Pythagorus’ Theorum, that corresponds to .26 diagonally. Beeeuuuutival!
The new Hitachi CM715U is the first step in my next upgrade, and let me tell you, it’s bloody heavy. There’ll be no LANing for this baby. Also, it’s not a flat screen and now I understand why they exist. It takes some fairly careful tweaking of monitor settings to iron out the curves in straight lines that can result from such a big screen. But having got it set up nicely, I can thoroughly recommend the extra size. Games are a different experience. Next come a new CPU, and video card - that is, when my bank balance recovers.
