Star Wars: Battleground Announced

LucasArts announced today that they were working with Ensemble Studios, creators of Age of Empires on a new RTS set in the Star Wars universe. Building on current partnerships with companies such as Verant Interactive and BioWare, LucasArts no doubt hopes that working with an experienced RTS studio will turn around the fortunes of strategy titles with the Star Wars brand on it.

Stomped have posted the official press release and following on from that, PC.IGN have an interview up with LucasArts’ Vice President of Development Randy Breen and Public Relations Director Tom Sarris.

While not particularly touching on any gameplay aspects, they do talk at length about the actual agreement with Ensemble, the development process and the news that this is not the un-announced Ensemble game code named “RTSIII”. Also of note is that Battleground will remain in a 2D world akin to the Age of Empires games and avoid the territory entered into with the much maligned Force Commander.
