Earth & Beyond Announced
Westwood finally came out of the shadows today, unveiling their massively-multiplayer game Earth and Beyond. The first information and pictures are available in this month’s edition of Computer and Video Games, and Westwood fansite Red Alert 2 eXtreme have a summary of the details in C&VG up, but no pictures - though they are promised later on.
Unfortunately however, Westwood seem to be heading down roads that Verant traversed back when they were developing EverQuest. Including features such as level-based progression through the game and an emphasis on questing, they are making choices that people have previously tried before going on to look for better ways to design their games. Far be it from me to second guess Westwood’s designers, but if the plan is to create a game where the only requirement is time to play, then guess what guys? It came out two years ago, it’s called EverQuest, it gets dominated by people with nothing better to do with their time and the gameplay gets old real quick.
