Interplay and EA Get Their Groove On(line)
In a statement issued today, publisher Interplay announced plans to setup Interplay.com, a portion of the company directly aimed at interactive online entertainment. According to the press release, “Interplay.com’s primary focus will be exploiting the company’s strong intellectual properties via MMPGs (massively multi-player games)”. The statement also makes mention of Black Isle and their unique position in the RPG market, which may very well translate to massively-multiplayer titles set in the Baldur’s Gate universe provided Neverwinter Nights proves a profitable experience.
In other news Electronic Arts has announced new plans to reposition itself in the online market through a partnership with AOL, the world’s largest Internet Service Provider. Citing factors such as games being designed that don’t need broadband connections unlike rivals such as Microsoft and Sony along with experience garnered through titles such as Ultima Online and Majestic, EA will have to attract a much wider audience that what they currently enjoy in UO if they are to make back the US$81 Million dollars that they are giving AOL to work with them.
